Post Event Information

Event Summary

Southern Resident Killer Whales are an iconic, culturally significant and endangered population that spends the spring, summer and fall in the Salish Sea, an area surrounded by a human population of over seven million. As of April 2019, only 74 Southern Residents remain.

Southern Residents live in tight family groups, led by the population’s mature females. Both male and female offspring will stay with their mother for life. As leaders of the Southern Residents, female killer whales play a crucial role in the health of their population.

On June 4, join the Georgia Strait Alliance and an all-female panel of experts in a community discussion on the unique parallels between female Southern Residents and women in our society. Explore how women, female allies and mothers can take a leadership role in protecting Southern Resident matrilineal families from further decline.

The event will be moderated by Kylie Stanton, Global BC’s Vancouver Island videojournalist.
