Democracy & its Futures

by UVic Centre for Global Studies
Democracy & its Futures

The Centre for Global Studies (CFGS) focuses on promoting collaborative, multidisciplinary, and cross-regional research connecting research in the field of global studies to local, national, and international communities. CFGS bridges academic research and student mentoring with knowledge mobilization and community engagement. As part of CFGS, the project Communication and Media Strategies for EU Experts in Canada, co-funded by the Erasmus+ Programme of the European Union, provides the core support for the panel discussion.

One of CFGS’ new initiatives is the development of a so-called Cedar Tree Institute that is designed to build a place for pioneering, engaged research and citizenship at the nexus of the local and the global, of practice and theory. This initiative provides the broader context in which the panel discussion and the two-day workshop entitled Democracies and its Futures will be organized at UVic on March 21 and 22.

EVENT SUMMARY

While democratic ideals rest on the principle of free and equitable public dialogue and deliberation, contemporary Western democracies are experiencing deepening divisions and growing non-engagement in the public sphere amidst massive disinformation, in particular in social media.

This, as the world stands at the nexus of intensifying and intertwining crises of democratic, social, ecological, economic and earth systems. The panel discussion will address the conditions under which civic dialogue and democratic deliberation can be effective.

What forms should and could public debates take?

What role can academia and the media play in facilitating and reviving processes of public deliberation as a cornerstone of democratic practice?

This event addressed the issues of Democracy and its Futures through a multilogue between experts from academia, media, and civil society.

This panel discussion was moderated by Rebeccah Nelems and Oliver Schmidtke from the Centre for Global Studies, University of Victoria.
