EVENT DETAILS:

Join Shefali Tsabary and Phil Moore for a webinar that delves into the lessons that only children can teach us.

Four years ago Dr. Shefali Tsabary, a clinical psychologist, mother and International speaker, arrived at Upland Hills School in Michigan. There, she spent the entire day interacting with the children and the adults of a school that is built on the idea that all children are born geniuses. During her visit she experienced the flow and the rhythm of a very different kind of school.

Phil Moore (author, The Future of Children) was the director of Upland Hills School from 1971 until 2013, who will host Dr. Shefali for this hour-long conversation dedicated to shifting our perspectives of how our schools could become places of Joy and Wonder.

Our Host

Phillip Moore began teaching at Upland Hills Farm School in 1971. He was asked to become the director of the school in February of 1972 and served until June of 2013. During this 42 year period Phil developed teams on the staff and board level to grow a learning community. This culture developed a synergetic collaboration between the staff members that transcended most traditional models of educational institutions. Six of those staff members known as the dignity staff members average 30 years of dedication and three of them are still teaching.

Phil also led design and development teams to build five buildings over 31 years. Each building demanded problem solving skills on many levels. They are: a 24 foot diameter Geodesic Dome that was wind powered for over two decades, a passive solar three bedroom home, a schoolhouse that contains 6 classrooms, a library and kitchen, an Ecological Awareness Center with a sod roof that is solar and wind powered, built by volunteers and innovators, and a performance theatre that seats 150 people.

He also led a team to raise 1.5 million dollars to secure a total of 31 acres of land, provide retirement income for the dignity teachers, and develop a solar array that provides the school with 70% of it’s electrical energy. He has just finished his first year of his Re-Wirement. He is currently developing a team to guide and innovate new initiatives through Trimtab.in, a newly formed company based in Oxford, Michigan and Livingston, Montana. He and his wife Karen raised two amazing children both of whom attended the school full term. They are blessed with five wonderful grandchildren.

About the Book

Phillip Moore, director of the independent Upland Hills School for over forty years has much to offer educators, parents, indeed anyone who cares about how we are raising the next generation that will care for our world. The Future of Children grew out of over four decades of direct experience with children who have been educated in a school that was based on love. These children have grown up to be very different kinds of people.

Their direct connection to the natural world has influenced them to feel a deep connection with life. Their sensory rich education has given them a life long love for creativity, for doing and making things of beauty and function. Their abilities to collaborate with others has given them the direct experience of accomplishing projects that live beyond the possibility of an individual. Their ability to do their own thinking and to be in love with life long learning has given them the confidence to live in a world of shifting complexity and deep uncertainty.

The lessons and the stories of this place and these people provide us with insights and the creative inspiration that will fuel new ways of teaching and new ways of learning. This book is a must for parents and educators who are dedicated to shifting from the dominant paradigm to a new paradigm that is based on love and deep inter-connection.
