A Shifting Landscape

Digital Shift Roundtable Discussion 1

Digital Shift, hosted by the Independent Media Arts Alliance (IMAA) in partnership with Flux Media Gallery and the Media Arts Alliance of the Pacific (MAAP) is a virtual gathering for independent media arts organizations and artists alike across the country. The gathering will consist of a variety of online events including Round-Table Discussions, Film Screenings, Featured Artists, and Artist Walks.

The theme “Shift” evokes a positive disruption towards greater access, inclusivity, equity and diversity in the media arts community and beyond; movement towards decolonized thinking; and a shift to digital means of creation, collaboration and dissemination. Digital Shift seeks to respond to a call to action initiated in June 2018, when the Independent Media Arts Alliance held its national conference entitled “Listen-Witness-Transmit” which was coordinated by the National Indigenous Media Arts Coalition (NIMAC) and focused on Indigenous leadership, creation, and ways of working within the media arts sector. This theme challenged the media arts community to address colonial impact within the sector and to undertake significant systemic change.

Digital Shift will be focused on Indigenous digital sovereignty; racial justice and inclusivity; access, accessibility, and the Digital Divide; artists’ digital rights, including fair payment and intellectual property; and digital ethics, AI, algorithms, privacy and surveillance.

Event Summary

DIGITAL SHIFT ROUNDTABLE CONVERSATION #1 – A SHIFTING LANDSCAPE

France Trépanier & Chris Creighton-Kelly are co-Directors of Primary Colours/ Couleurs primaires. Its main objective is to place Indigenous arts at the centre of the Canadian arts system. Primary Colours/Couleurs primaires also asserts that creative practices by artists of colour, who have roots around the world, play a critical role in imagining the future(s) of Canadian art making.

They will present “A Shifting Landscape”, by approaching the immediate challenges in the Canadian arts system. Using a historical perspective, they situate the development of this Eurocentric system in the context of colonialism; the post World War 2 ‘cultural nation building’ period; the 80’s and 90’s push by IBPoC artists to gain access to this system; the 25 year response of Canadian arts institutions/organizations and the current resetting of this system in the wake of Indigenous struggles and the BLM uprisings.
