PAST EVENT

CRFAIR was initiated in the early 1990s as an informal network of organizations involved in promoting food security in the capital region. A roundtable structure was formed that brought together diverse organizations which were involved in the food system in different ways. The first ten years of our work focused on learning and networking, and undertaking public education to make food systems and food security issues a public priority. As the roundtable grew, CRFAIR established the Food Access Working Group, the Food Policy Working Group, the Farmlands Working Group, and the Food Literacy Working Group. Each of these working groups was made up of key stakeholders and experts who identified priorities and undertook research, education and action based projects to address key issues.

The Network launched in 2015 as a way of connecting across sectors and silos to engage the whole food system. Strengthening diversity and collaboration are critical to achieving system change. Various members of the network have been working together since the early 1990s, and pockets of collective action have emerged over time, such as Farm to School network, the Victoria Urban Food Table and the Food Share Network. Organizing across these networks, intentionally seeding other relationships, and working together to build collaboration between community, government and the private sector, is a key strategy for innovation and action. Members include activists, government, funders, educators, academics, students, farmers, fishers, food processors, retailers, chefs, restaurants, and community organizations.
The pandemic has shed light on the injustices and discrepancies within our Food Systems, igniting a collective awareness of the need to rethink and restructure the way we interact as a food movement.
This December 3rd and 4th, ‘Food Future: Rooted in Change’ will challenge us to question, be accountable and reimagine what a just, equitable and sustainable Food System means. Together we will discuss the challenges we’ve faced in crisis and engage in meaningful dialogue around the injustices that disproportionately impact our communities while making space to celebrate and acknowledge the resilience that we have seen throughout the past year.
This virtual event will connect our communities, our network and initiatives in the Capital Region around access to food, the future of our local food economy, food justice and creating resilient and sustainable food systems. Each session will be rooted in engaging participants to rethink and co-create what a more resilient, equitable and just Food Future means for all.
