The Disappearing Mother Trees
Dr Suzanne Simard

TED Speaker and UBC Professor Suzanne Simard has earned a reputation for pioneering research on tree connectivity and communication. Her research brilliantly illuminates that forests are social, cooperative creatures with communal lives not that different from our own.

Dr. Simmard is a Professor of Forest Ecology at the University of British Columbia, where she currently leads The Mother Tree Project and co-directs the Belowground Ecosystem Group. Her work has been published widely, with over 170 scientific articles in peer-reviewed journals, including Nature, Ecology, and Global Biology, and she has co-authored the book Climate Change and Variability. Her research has been communicated broadly through three TED Talks, TED Experiences, as well as articles and interviews in The New Yorker, National Geographic, The Globe and Mail, NPR, CNN, CBC, and many more. She lives with her two adventurous daughters and their wild and crazy extended family in the mountains around Nelson, British Columbia. You can purchase her recently released book, Finding the Mother Tree, here.

Territory Acknowledgement

Our broadcast venue Sunset Labs sits on the traditional, ancestral, unceded homelands of the Lekwungen people, now also known as the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations. We endeavour to honour this land and its treaties by strengthening our relationship and responsibilities to them, and we acknowledge and thank the Lekwungen people, on whose land we live, work, create, dance and play.

Event Summary

Dr. SUZANNE SIMARD
the Disappearing Mother Trees

Did you know that the Fairy Creek watershed holds more carbon per hectare than the Amazon rainforest?

Whether we’re talking about Fairy Creek, interior BC or the Amazon – old growth forest is under siege by an insatiable industry that won’t acknowledge just how unique and important these ancient forests are to our collective survival.

Join us for a compelling conversation with TED Speaker and UBC Professor Dr. Suzanne Simard who will share with us her quest to find and protect our ‘Mother Trees’ – tree elders that nurture forests in ways that remind us of human families—by caring for each other, sharing food, and sheltering their young.

The disappearing Mother Trees heralds a tremendous collective loss – and time is running out to preserve these invaluable ancients – both locally and globally. Let’s come together to learn about their pivotal place in our world, and maybe, some imminent steps we can take to preserve them.
